Ninoy Aquino Day

ninoy500August 18 is a special nonworking holiday to commemorate Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino’s death anniversary. Ninoy’s death anniversary as approved by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was supposed to be on August 21 but it falls on a Thursday. Since the nearest Monday is August 18, it is therefore a holiday. R.A. 9492 provides that holidays, except those which are religious in nature, moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9256, SECTION 1Ninoy Aquino Day. – In order to commemorate the death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino, Jr., August twenty-one of every year is hereby declared as the Ninoy Aquino day which shall be a national nonworking holiday.

What is Ninoy Aquino Day? It marks the anniversary of assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. Returning to the Philippines after three years of self-imposed exile, Aquino was shot in the head and killed on August 21, 1983 as he was escorted off an airplane by soldiers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Aquino was a staunch opponent of then-President Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino’s death sparked anti-Marcos sentiment that led to the 1986 EDSA Revolution.
