BBC Show Insults Filipina Domestic Helpers
There are many OFW in United Kingdom, some are working as domestic helper to make like easier for their family. Working away to your family, relatives, friends and your country is a noble thing to do, a sacrifice. But how come there are these racists that are having fun insulting filipino domestic helpers.
There’s these comedy show in United Kingdom titled “Harry and Paul” who makes Pinoys in UK outraged for their comedy episode last September 26, 2008.
Please watch the video. They called that comedy? Its not funny and done in bad taste. I find it an insult to filipina, to our culture, to our race. Here in the Philippines, we consider OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) as bagong bayani (means new heroes). The said show promotes sexual exploitation and demeans the image of Filipino domestic helpers to the eyes of their televiewers. Is it hard to make your televiewers laugh and make it at our expense. We deserve a public apology.
Filipino organizations have started mapping out plans for a protest action against BBC. Loline Adelina Reed is leading an e-mail brigade to create awareness among Filipinos worldwide regarding the impact of the program to Filipino domestic workers. As a blogger, we should also do our part. Let our voice be heard.
Update (Oct. 7, 2008):
Online petition launched against BBC (British Broadcasting Company). Please sign the Dignity and Respect For Filipino Workers Petition here.

Well, we chinese are always portrayed as evil characters in Hollywood films most of the time. So, I definitely sympathise with your point of view. But do note the fact that we are better than them as we have our own culture and heritage that we can be proud of and that alone makes us even better than they portrayed us as.

You Filipinos should watch your own tv programs with the same critical eye in your Native Country.
Sure, you don’t mind making fun of black people on GMA, but you can’t take a bit of HUMOR.
Laugh a bit.

Gingo, I approve your message primarily for my other readers see your comment. Filipinos are the happiest people in the world, don’t you know that? And we are easy to be pleased but not to the extent of degrading our people. You should know when to laugh if its really funny.
Pu Niao, Thank you for your sympathy. I love chinese action movies

i actually don’t find the video offensive because i’ve seen worst. it is comedy and they’re supposed to show exaggerated situations. my cousin in the UK said the joke was supposed to be on that northerner and not to the “Filipina maid”.
good thing there’s a comment coming from a Chinese because i personally think they should be the one complaining instead of us. after all Chinese, Mexicans, Indians, Irish, Middle Easters, Jews, are mostly the ones who are used in comedies like these and not us. this is a first time for us (Desperate Housewives incident last year is not counted because that is a completely different story) and i think should not be taken seriously. try watching SNL, MAD TV, The Sketch Show, The Office, South Park etc and i think you’ll get my point

Chorva, Good for you that you don’t find it offensive. If the issue is not to be taken seriously, politicians, Department of Justice and Philippine Embassy in UK should not react as they do now. Its like we see things in different angles.
Filipinos in UK reacted because they do know what things are there. I’m pleased with Pu Niao’s comment that we are better.

i agree that we see things in different angles. pero gusto ko lang ipaalala na mas may karapatang magalit ang ibang bansa kesa sa atin dahil minsan lang naman tayong matira sa mga comedy shows na tulad nito. bakit ang mga Mexicans ba nanghingi na ng aplogy sa American government? ang mga Chinese o Indians? di ko lang talaga gets eh
that’s the thing, our Government reacted this way so people will forget what’s really been happening to our country. alam mo na para mabaling sa ibang issue ang atensyon ng tao. syempre sisimpatya ang gobyerno sa mga OFW for their own good.
and if you really think this is to be taken seriously eh di dapat lahat ng comedy shows mag-apologize sa lahat ng mga tinitira nila. or better yet tanggalin na lang lahat ng comedy shows. but if ever that happens i’ll be very upset, i’m a big fan of those comedy shows eh
