Poverty Drives Pinoy To Become OFW

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) are Philippines’ unsung heroes, no doubt about that. They earn a living, send money to their families, in short they contributed to our economy. Some of them are financially stable but working away from home is indeed a sacrifice for the sake of their loved ones.

How come there are more OFW now compared before? During my high school years, there was 2-3 of my classmates had a father that was a seaman or working in Saudia Arabia. I guess, we don’t use the term OFW back then. When did OFW statistics started increasing? Is there such thing as OFW history?

What drives OFW to leave Philippines? POVERTY. They leave because there are limited opportunities in our country. The present financial crisis in US, there are many Filipinos affected in US, some got unemployed. How about the stranded OFW in Dubai? Recently, it was featured in TV Patrol. They will rather gamble than come back home. Last night, I saw Vice President Noli de Castro on TV giving advise to OFW to go home than get stranded.

The odd thing is… according to the government, Philippines is not affected of US financial crisis. I see… smell… hear… more and more signs of poverty each day. In my opinion, Philippines is long been in crisis for years. If we’re not, no Filipinos will choose to work abroad.
