The opening of the 3rd World Pyro Olympics is supposed to be tonight. My kids are asking me if we will be going to SM Mall of Asia last night, having experienced the last time we went there without 3rd World Pyro Olympics made us tired already of the event. I thought, I haven't noticed any advertisements and announcements unlike the previous World Pyro Olympics events. Just to make sure, I've called up La Mancha Productions this morning.

Its confirmed. The new and final schedule of 3rd World Pyro Olympics will start on May 3, a Saturday and the succeeding Saturdays of May. The official website of World Pyro Olympics is still down for maintenance, the management told me that their site will be available next week or the other week.

They're still finalizing the participants and schedule, if that's the case, there could be changes with previous given schedule and participants. Its guaranteed that it will be on May 3, I hope. Personally, its a good schedule considering people are getting ready for the start of school year, they could watch the event after they went shopping at SM MOA. Good luck to them on the later part of May since its also the start of rainy season in the Philippines.

3rd World Pyro olympics Schedule:
May 3, 2008 -China and Germany
May 10,2008 - Canada and France
May 17, 2008 - Italy and Venezuela
May 24, 2008 - Fellowship of Fire - Collaboration of all countries with the Philippines
- La Mancha Pyro Productions representing the Philippines - Pyromusical show exihibition

I'll be posting here the final schedule as soon I have it. For the meantime, you may read my previous World Pyro Olympics articles.

Pinoy Tourist In The Philippines

I was born and grew up in Manila and seldom made vacations during my younger years. A business managed by my father added to the reasons why, it was impossible for him to leave for a couple of days for a family vacation. As I grew up, I want to explore more the beautiful places in the Philippines. I've mentioned several times on this blog that I don't want to be a tourist on my beloved country.

The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands covering a land area of 115,739 sq. m. (299,764 sq. km.). Main island groups are Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Capital is Manila. Time Zone is GMT + 8 hours.

This is my blog's special page, I'll be updating this page to add more blog post links. I personally took the pictures, please don't make me sad by stealing them. I have pictures (from my previous escapades) that I want to scan and post it here. Sorry, I don't have digicam at that time. Since its summer and school vacation, I'm sure there will be more addition to this page. Mabuhay!

Goodbye La Nina

Just heard of the news that La Nina is nearly over to the Philippines when the temperature is 34°C. Usually La Nina occur every 3-5 years to tropical countries like Philippines. La Nina caused floods and landslides to Philippine provinces. If I remember it right, there was also La Nina when typhoon Reming triggered mudslides from Mayon Volcano and damaged many towns of Albay including Cagsawa Ruins Park in December 2006. I found out that La Niña conditions typically last approximately 9-12 months. Whatever, I got used to our extreme weather condition, if its not La Nina (cold weather), it could be El Nino (warm weather) and vice versa.

The weakening of La Nina will surely bring us hot summer even at night. This summer, its possible that the temperature will go up to 38°C. Mudslides triggered by heavy rains entombed a community of 1,800 in Guinsaugon on Southern Leyte province, about 675 km (420 miles) southeast of Manila, in February this year. Incessant rains since December also damaged some crop areas, forcing local feedmillers, poultry and livestock firms to import about 217,000 tonnes of corn since January. Philippines is experiencing rice shortage, La Nina had a big contribution to this problem.

According to PAGASA, rainy season will start on the second half of May. Although its too early to prepare for the coming rainy season, lets not forget that summer is the best season to fix and check our house roofs.

  13. I've mentioned from my previous post that the first "plus" is the addition of Luis Lucky Manzano to the PBB host family. The 2nd "plus" is the additonal housemates that studied to rival schools, Ateneo and La Salle.

  14. Robi - True Blue Atenista Of Quezon City
  15. Josef - Lethal La Sallite Of Mandaluyong
The third "plus" wasn't revealed yet but Lucky gave the clue. Its the hidden parts of the Big Brother House that consists of separate female room, male room, living room and jacuzzi. Who will live there? That would be revealed soon!

Big Brother will be back tonight where the Big Brother house will be open again its door for Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 2 Plus. Why 'plus'? That's for us to find out tonight.

The only plus I know is that Luis Lucky Manzano will be joining the other regular PBB hosts such as Toni Gonzaga, Mariel Rodriguez and Bianca Gonzalez. Lucky Manzano was falsely rumored before that he was the additional housemate to the PBB Celebrity edition 2, so here he is... not as a housemate but a co-host. He could be another spice to the PBB family.

Hosting schedules:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Toni Ganzaga
Tuesday and Thursday: Luis Manzano
Saturday: Toni Gonzaga & Luis Manzano
Sunday: Mariel Rodriguez & Luis Manzano

The church was built in 1606, it was made of bamboo, nipa and mulawen at first. The church was oftentimes damaged by eartquake. It was rebuilt again in 1810 and damaged again in 1945 during "World War II". The image of Nuestra Senora De Guia was originally homed at Manila Cathedral and transferred here in 1918. The present church was built in 1947.

Her image is the oldest in the Philippines having been discovered on May 19, 1571 around the seashore which is now the site of the Ermita Church by soldiers of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi after he took over possession of the city in honor of King Felipe II of Spain. It is said that the image must have been one of those brought to the country by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and must have been sent by the Cebu native chiefs as a gift to one of the rajahs in Manila.

The Shrine of Nuestra Senora De Guia is popularly known as Ermita Church. That's the best picture I can show you, it was dark already and this was my sixth church on my list. Remember, Visita Iglesia is at night time. The picture of the Altar of Repose from my Visita Iglesia article was taken here at Ermita Church or Nuestra Senora De Guia Church. Their Altar of Repose is really beautiful highlighted with all the flowers, curtains and lights.

Anyway, from Intramuros, another jeepney ride bound to Harrison or Baclaran will take you to Ermita, Manila. You can see the shrine at your left, few blocks from UN Avenue.

San Agustin Church

San Agustin Church originally known as Iglesia de San Pablo, founded in 1571 is the oldest stone church in the Philippines (built in 1586). It has withstood many earthquakes from 1645 up to the present and survived the British Invasion in 1762, the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Japanese Invasion in 1942. In this church - the ashes of early Spanish Conquistadores Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, Salcedo, Lavezares and Blessed Pedro de Zuniga and others now rest in the easternmost chapel of the transept.

It was also declared by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as a World Heritage Site in 1993. In fact, it is one of the four Baroque Churches in the Philippines declared by UNESCO.

San Agustin Church is the fifth church I've visited. If I wasn't mistaken, I think its three blocks away from Manila Cathedral. You'll surely enjoy walking when you can see the old spanish buildings and walkway of Intramuros.

Manila Cathedral

From Sta. Cruz Church, take a jeepney ride heading to Pier. You can see from your left the Manila Cathedral. Actually, I'm happy that I finally saw the Cathedral with my own eyes on my first visit. Manila Cathedral is the fourth church on my Visita Iglesia list.

Upon seeing the official website of Manila Cathedral, I learned that I haven't explore some parts of the cathedral. I didn't saw the Chapels of St. Joseph, San Lorenzo Ruiz, Sacred Heart, Blessed Sacrament, St. Pius X, Ina Poon Bato, Sta. Potenciana, Sto. Nino, St. Jude, St. Peter and many more. I'm looking forward to my next visit to the Cathedral this summer.

From Quiapo church (2nd church), I walked into the streets of Raon to Sta. Cruz, you can take a pedicab ride to go to Sta. Cruz Church (3rd church).

Like Quiapo, there were many people at Sta. Cruz Church. Aside from offering a prayer, I did lit candles on this church, its my 2nd time to visit this church. The first time was one of my Visita Iglesia.

Saint Vincent De Paul Parish Church is the first on my Visita Iglesia list. It is located at San Marcelino Street, Manila, Philippines near Kalaw Ave. The parish church is one of the favorite church for weddings for its solemnity and beautiful altar.
In the midst of the most distracting occupations his soul was always intimately united with God. Though honored by the great ones of the world, he remained deeply rooted in humility. The Apostle of Charity, the immortal Vincent de Paul, breathed his last in Paris at the age of eighty. His feast day is September 27th. He is the patron of charitable societies.

How to get there? The church is situated at the back of then Jai-Alai and in front of Adamson University. The place is accessible via LRT or jeepney.

The last picture is the Altar of Repose of saint Vincent De Paul Parish Church.

Visita Iglesia

Just came home from Visita Iglesia. I don't know if it should be Visita Iglesia or Bisita Iglesia. This is my fifth year of doing the filipino Catholic tradition. Visita Iglesia is a tradition wherein you would visit seven churches. Even if I'm out of town vacation, I make it a point to do the tradition as my "panata" (filipino word that means vow or pledge).

Visita Iglesia is not just visiting seven churches just like some who unknowingly doing every Holy Thursday. Stations of the Cross is also on Maundy Thursday and can be done either at daytime or at night. As far as I know, Visita Iglesia is giving honor to the Blessed Sacrament of each seven churches. Usually, the celebration begins with a mass, mostly at 6pm. The mass is followed by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament before it is taken to the Altar of Repose. So, unlike Stations of the Cross, Visita Iglesia will be done at night time ONLY until midnight. All saints and stations inside the church were veiled with lavender fabrics, lights are off to the main altar and the Altar of Repose is lighted and adorned with flowers.

Every year, I want to include church or churches on my list that I haven't been visited. This year's Visita Iglesia, I leave home at around 4:30 pm to give extra alloted time for travel. Here's the list of the churches in order:

  1. St. Vincent De Paul Parish Church
  2. Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church)
  3. Sta. Cruz Parish Church
  4. Manila Cathedral
  5. San Agustin Church
  6. Shrine Of Nuestra Senora De Guia (Ermita Church)
  7. Malate Church
Some churches are offering free salabat (ginger juice) or hot tea, and/or any food to church goers at the church compound.

My thoughts:
hmmn... I thought there's supposed to be proper "dress code" to church. I did found so many people wearing sleeveless, spaghetti straps and short shorts.

Its been a month when I noticed that technorati stopped updating my recent posts even I manually ping my account. I've tried to email technorati not once but thrice, all I've received from them was their computer generated response.

Actually, to the mind of a helpless blogger, the normal thing to do is to seek help by email, reading the FAQ or join the technorati forum. Why is that I found so many blogspot bloggers who had the same problems. Was it my provider or simply because they really have support backlog? I've waited for one month for their so-called support technician but to no avail. Everytime I made an entry and manually ping them, I became helpless, the ping didn't work on this blog. On the other hand, I don't have problem with technorati on my wordpress blog. Whatever it was, I think I've found the solution.

It is in the new blogger template or xml file that we are using. Did you noticed that I've changed again my template? I'm not yet finished customizing the template, sorry if sometimes, it looked "different". I don't know yet until when I'll be using this. As you can see, I'm fond of personalizing my layout. Maybe I've deleted some codes from my old previous template when doing some template tweaks that made my blog "banned" from technorati updates.

When I've changed my template, I login to my technorati account. Guess what? All of my previous posts that supposedly updated before was there already! That's the solution, change the template but don't forget to back up your widgets and/or files.

The much awaited boxing rematch of Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez, The Unfinished Business, their unfinished business is finally "finished". Ciara Sotto sang the Philippines' National Anthem, too bad that they've mispelled her name as "Sierra" Sotto.

That was a close fight with Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao won over Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez by split decision. Pacquiao won by 3 points, 115 points over 112 points of Marquez. There are other rounds that Manuel Marquez have more points than Pacquiao.

Highlights of the boxing event:
Round 1: The boxing started with Pacquiao and Marquez both agressive where Pacquiao wants to steal the WBC Super Featherweight Title from Marquez. Marquez earned points on round 1.

Round 2: Pacquiao did received solid right punches from Marquez, he almost fell when hit by one of this punches. Marquez won 2nd round again.

Round 3: Pacquiao might be angry and become too aggresive and hit Marquez that made him knocked down. lol The crowd is cheering for Pacquiao. Points for Pacquiao now.

Round 4: Marquez wants this round to be his round but no to avail. Pacquiao won again the round.

Round 5: Marquez showed that he recovered from his knockdown to this round and earned points over Pacquiao.

Round 6: They were fighting away from each other. It seemed they were waiting or looking for the right timing to punch. I guess, this round goes to Marquez for his combination punches.

Round 7: Unintentional headbutt made the upper right corner of Marquez' right eye bleed.

Round 8: Pacquiao's right eyebrow bleed and continuosly bleeding til the end of the game. He had the hard time seeing Marquez but he didn't gave up. The host said, he was literally blind on his right eye. Indeed a filipino pride.

Round 9: Marquez targeted Pacquiao's right eye, and successfully made it. In the middle of the round, referee call for a small break because Marquez' right eye was bleeding again.

Round 10: It was shown that Pacquiao's eye was bleeding from under and over his right eye. People are shouting and cheering for this round. Adrenalin rush from the boxers and the crowd.

Round 11: A classic match of a puncher and a boxer. Marquez combination wasn't as snappy as the first rounds.

Round 12: It was the last round, naturally they are both agreesive. Pacquiao did have the hard time coping with marquez boxing strategy, but he did his best.

Palm Sunday... Palaspas

Everybody is excited to watch the much awaited Pacquiao vs. Marquez 2: Unfinished Business tomorrow. Not to mention that it is also the 487th anniversary when Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines. Tomorrow is also Palm Sunday, it is also known as Domingo de Ramos.

Palm Sunday or Linggo ng Palaspas in our native tongue, in the Christian calendar, the Sunday before Easter, sixth and last Sunday in Lent, and the first day of Holy Week. This morning, vendors will start selling "palaspas" to bring to church and have it blessed during the mass. Palaspas is decorated and weaved palm leaves. We would afterward bring it home and place it in the altar. A filipino belief that it will protect our home from bad spirits.

I still remember the old filipino movie where the actor whipped the manananggal with palaspas. A manananggal is filipino's mythical evil creature that has the capability to leave her lower torso to fly and look for person to eat the internal organs. She can't tolerate the pain of palaspas. Hey, it was just a movie but I was really scared at that time. Although I don't believe in manananggal, to my young mind, the scene from that movie tought me the protection of palaspas.

Joroan Shrine is where the image of Nuestra Senora De Salvacion also located. According to my brother, when they speak of Joroan, they were also referring to Nuestra Senora De Salvacion. Joroan was known in Bicol because of her image and title as Nuestra Señora de Salvacion.

Every year, specially during the whole month of August until September, devotees from all over Bicol Region visit the shrine. The last Saturday of August is traditionally held as a special day of pilgrimage. During the vesper of the last Friday, devotees in buses and jeepneys from other provinces of Bicol are coming to the shrine of Blessed Virgin in Joroan, Tiwi, Albay.

The turtle species that can be found mostly in the Philippines. Its called "Green Turtle" with scientific name Chelonia mydas. Most filipinos call it "pawikan", others call it bildog (Isabela), tabugon (Mindoro), talisayon, mandarait ( Bicol); daranawan (Samar), anuno, katuan (Palawan); pudno (Tausug, Samal); payukan (Mapun); tortuga (Zamboanga); tuod (Siargao, Camiguin). This is just one of our endangered species that can be found in Tubbataha Reef in Palawan. Tubbataha is nominated for the "New Seven Wonders of Nature".
Tubbataha is a reef ecosystem made up of two atolls located in the middle of the Sulu Sea. It is a sanctuary for marine life. The reefs lie on the Cagayan Ridge, a line of extinct underwater volcanoes which starts from the north at the Sultana Shoal and ends in the south at the San Miguel Islands. It is located 92 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan and 80 nautical miles southwest of Cagayancillo. Taken from here.

Currently, Tubbataha Reef is on the 29th place. Voting will continue until December 31, 2008. Although we still have plenty of time, glitchline is joining the campaign of pinoy bloggers, calling all filipinos to vote for Tubbataha Reef as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

On the other hand, Chocolate Hills of Bohol is also nominated on its 42th place as of this time and Mayon Volcano of Bicol. After voting, link is provided on the page to invite your relatives and friends to vote. Please inform them of Tubbataha Reef of Palawan, Chocolate Hills of Bohol and Mayon Volcano of Bicol. Although Mayon Volcano is currently not in top 77 nominees, Mayon Volcano after typhoon Reming is still beautiful because of its perfect cone. Please vote now.

After four years, the much awaited rematch of the Philipine' pride Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez is few days from now. Pacquiao commonly known to many as Pacman, earned the nickname "The Mexican Killer" after he knocked out Erik Morales twice and beating Marco Antonio Barrera. Of course, Marquez won't allow that he will be the third to be beaten up by Manny Pacquiao to finish their unfinished business.

The Pacquiao VS Marquez II: Unfinished Business will be on March 15, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, USA, 9p.m. EST/6p.m. PST (March 16 in the Philippines) is a rematch of their May 8, 2004 legendary battle which ended in a draw. The boxing event is produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View. Although its a week from now, Pinoy are already searching for a better venue to watch Pacquiao-Marquez live.

Actually, I'm still thinking where will I watch the upcoming boxing event, Residents of General Santos, Pacquiao's hometown are lucky, they can watch it live for free while other filipinos will have to buy skyrocketing ticket prices (Php 300-800) to their chosen venue.

On the other hand, Pacmania will shake the Philippines again! No traffic... no rally... no prayer rally... forget about the present political crisis for the meantime. While Manny Pacquiao is doing his best for our country in the field of boxing, filipino will be united again. I don't think FG Mike Arroyo will be there again in Las Vegas.

Note: Pacquiao vs Marquez 2 result and other information will be posted soon on this blog.

How To Tag

Should I assigned a day for tag day? Nah, I don't think so, I seldom been tagged now that my blog is a PR0 since I've moved to a new domain. I'm honored that I've been tagged, it doesn't matter if I still have unfinished articles. Its very easy to tag any blogger you want. The problem to tagging is when the blogger you tagged didn't do what he/she supposed to do. Snob? No. Maybe, tagging is not his/her cup of tea. Or something else... *wink* But honestly, it didn't felt nice. I've experienced this many times, sometimes I don't wanna do meme anymore. On the contrary, its good karma, sharing the love through linking. Call it linklove as many bloggers call it.

I was first tagged from my wordpress.com blog and really don't know what to do. Research and observe... that's how I came to know how tagging works. Here's how to do it to those who want to know:

  1. Make an article to respond to the tag.
  2. Mention the blogger who tag you, make sure that you place the exact link of the article to his/her name. Tagging is useless if you forgot this part.
  3. Then link the bloggers you want to tag and who are suppose to link you back to your article.

Remember that not all bloggers are doing the "tag" thing, don't expect much. Don't link too much, so google will not brand you as a linkie farm. You want a linkback, right? If you're using a wordpress blog, make sure that you have a dofollow plugin or don't use the rel="nofollow" code to your links on that article. Otherwise, the bloggers you tagged will never know that they've been tagged.

Whew! So many do's and dont's... Anyway, mckhoii and joanjoyce shared these awards to me. Isn't that sweet?!

I'm sharing these lovely awards to deimos, ito54joni, orangeinks, marikenya and woobiediva. Its my way of saying "thank you". I'm not expecting a linkback. I guess, I'll be making a weekly linklove entry to thank all the bloggers that have been nice to me. Cheers!

The typhoid outbreak in six barangays of Calamba, Laguna had worsened, victims have increased from 241 to 500 persons. I've watched the news last night, JP Rizal Memorial Hospital (provincial hospital) had set up tents at the hospital grounds to accomodate the increasing number of patients. Some patients are confined at the nearby town hospitals.

Update: The local government of Calamba, Laguna declared state of calamity as of March 6, 2008 because of the typhoid fever outbreak.

What bothers me now is the report that the water in Calamba, Laguna had passed the water bacteriology test. The ancestral home of my Aunt is there, if I remember it right, their water there is nawasa. The town folks of Calamba and DOH (Department of Health) cannot think of possible reason of the typhoid outbreak but the water in their area. If its not the water, where did the outbreak came from? Laguna is a nearby province which we frequently visits during summer season. Although, we used to buy mineral water when we are out of town, this is alarming.

Typhoid fever is an illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. Common worldwide, it is transmitted by the fecal-oral route — the ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. The bacteria then multiply in the blood stream of the infected person and are absorbed into the digestive tract and eliminated with the waste. The organism is a Gram-negative short bacillus that is motile due to its peritrichous flagella. - taken from wikipedia
Did you know that the municipality of Paranaque City is strictly implementing the monthly water bacteriology test to restaurants and similar estblishments? They've started implementing it two years ago but this year they are really strict about the issue. The water bacteriology test costs php 300 - 350. The ice should be test too, that's an additional php 600-700 to your monthly expenses. I don't know if the same requirement applies to other municipalities and provinces in the Philippines. I support the requirement, its for a good cause. BUT, the local government should start demanding for a better water service first to Maynilad.

I'm drinking 2-3 liters of water daily. A liter of premium gasoline is almost php 50, exchange rate today is $1 = php 40.71 and 1 liter mineral water is Php 20. Think about it...

The month of March in the Philippines is considered the start of summer season, we observe March as Fire Prevention Month. I woke up this morning hearing the firetruck sirens again, this time its not in a hurry. I also heard my neighbor who happens to be a fire volunteer... I thought, there's a fire again within the area. Its a parade of fire fighters on their fire truck and a voice coming from a megaphone announcing that its March again and its Fire Prevention Month.

For me, its the signal for renewing my fire issurance policy. Our house is insured but I do also have a separate fire insurance policy for the content of our house. It didn't cost that much to secure your house. My father started getting the policy when he was still with us.

Several years ago, a fire started three houses away from our house. It happened at night where some people are already sleeping. We just heard people shouting that there was fire, people are rushing for their things to be save from fire. Because we are near to the burning house, the instinct was to saved our belongings first. We carry them all to my grandma's house two streets away from ours. With the help of my other relatives and friends, within 15-30 minutes, our house was "cleaned". To sum it up, the fire was because of faulty electrical wirings, two houses were burned and it took us one day to returned everything in their place in our house.

My father learned from this experience and he started getting a fire insurance policy. He said that when fire elopes again near our house, all we have to carry out are our clothes and other personal belongings. Lock the door and leave other things inside, they're insured. Why have the door locked? To save them from thieves!
