No Classes On People Power Anniversary
It was announced that there will be no classes in all levels nationwide on February 23, 2009, Monday in celebration of People Power anniversary. The exact anniversary is February 25 , a Wednesday… do you think people will celebrate the anniversary on Monday? I don’t agree to R.A. 9492 (economic holiday) in this case. Also, it is still a regular working day, only the students don’t have classes.
R.A. 9492 provides that holidays, except those which are religious in nature, moved to the nearest Monday unless otherwise modified by law, order or proclamation.
The way I see it, the announcement is just their way so that they won’t received any negative feedbacks of omitting Edsa Revolution from the Official Non-Working Holidays for this year (Proclamation 1699). Is that so? What will happen to students on Wednesday if rallies is everywhere? With the present corruption and other issues we have now… tsk. tsk. tsk.

I googled for year 2009 non working holidays in the Philippines in preparation for school vacation. The list below is based on Proclamation 1699 signed in December 24, 2008 by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

April 9-12 (Thursday to Sunday) – Holy Week
May 1 (Friday) – Labor Day
June 12 (Friday) – Independence Day
August 31 (Monday) – National Heroes Day
November 30 (Monday) – Bonifacio Day
December 25 (Friday) – Christmas
December 30 (Wednesday) – Rizal Day
January 1 (Friday) – New Year’s Day
Special Non-Working Days:
August 21 (Friday) – Ninoy Aquino Day
November 1 (Sunday) – All Saints Day
November 2 (Monday) – All Souls Day
December 24 (Thursday) – Christmas Eve
December 31 (Thursday) – New Year’s Eve
Where’s Edsa Revolution from the list? February 25 holiday was omitted from the list. The Edsa People Power Anniversary this year falls on a Wednesday. Last year, I attended Misa Para Sa Katotohanan, I don’t heard any announcement as of this time but I’m planning to hear mass for the celebration.
I wonder if there’s something to celebrate when we are number 1 in most corrupt countries. Or the government is avoiding rallies?I guess, there will be more people now. The hot issue last year was the ZTE-NBN controversy, correct me if I’m wrong but I think issue vanished and another corruption exposed… and another… and another…

Christmas Holidays In The Philippines
Its in our culture that Filipinos celebrate Christmas season the longest. Why? Because we are family oriented, we have close family ties not with our immediate family but to all our relatives. December is usually hectic on attending Christmas parties with relatives, friends, office mates, classmates, organizations… you name it. Some even travel from provinces to Manila or the other way around just to be with their loved ones.
This year 2008 will be a long Christmas vacation. Good news, isn’t it? I usually looked like a zombie with dark circles under my eyes during December. Its annoying but seeing the people I love is giving me the happiness. Who cares about the eye bags?
December 1 -November 30 is a Sunday, Bonifacio Day. December 1 is the nearest Monday. Although it is not considered a Christmas holiday, the celebration fall on December. Better use the day wisely on Christmas shopping.
December 25 – Christmas Day 2008 is Thursday. Its common that the day before Christmas is half day to most of the businesses. Some employees will be needing more time to travel in the province to go home in time for Noche Buena.
December 26 – (Friday) It was declared special non-working holiday.
December 29 – (Monday) Also declared special non-working holiday.
December 30 – (Tuesday) Rizal Day
December 31 – (Wednesday) Happy New Year!
My kids Christmas party is on December 19 (Friday) and will be back for school on January 5. I doubt if I have plenty of time to catch some sleep after Christmas. Maligayang Pasko!
Oct 1-Feast Of Ramadan, A Holiday
It was announced today by Executive Secretary Eduardo that on October 1, 2008 is a non working holiday in celebration of Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan).
It is a Wednesday and not included in holiday economics. It is included in proclamation 1625 signed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita last September 19, 2008.
“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, as a regular holiday throughout the country,” according to Proclamation 1625.
Our filipino muslim brothers will be happy on the good news. Even if we have present MILF problem, the muslim community can have their holy celebration in peace.
